Acianthus caudatus aka Mayfly Orchid
Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Angiospermae
Class: Monocots
Order: Asparagales
Family: Orchidaceae
Mark Oliphant Conservation Park – August 23rd, 2014 – Cool, wet conditions

This is a species not widely appreciated by Orchid-lovers – It’s very hard to photograph, especially if you are using Auto Focus, it’s tiny, and its colours would be right at home on the set of Alien – It also looks manky, but on the right day, and with a macro lense, it can look extraordinary and full of character – We waited for weeks to get these shots, searching high and low up and down hills all the while! – Finally, Adam spotted these on an unpromising bit of dirt roadwork – I was very surprised by both the location and their pristine condition.
